Harney Landscape

Harney Landscape

The stark landscape of eastern Oregon’s Harney County, a high-desert plateau with about as many cattle as people, is a favorite painting subject of mine.

Acrylic on canvas, 18 by 24 inches. No. 2008.84.

Riley Pond

Painting: Riley Pond

Riley Pond is the little stock-watering hole just off Highway 20 at the crossroads of Riley, in the Oregon desert west of Burns.

There’s not much here but some marsh reeds and water and the sound of blackbirds but it’s a nice place to get out and stretch when you’re driving through.

Acrylic on canvas, 9 by 12 inches. #2008.81. $40 at Etsy

Malheur Rimrock

Painting: Malheur Rimrock

Here’s a landscape I quite like, both because it succeeds as a painting and because the image brings back good memories.

Just off the road that leads from Highway 205 to Krumbo Reservoir in Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, you can look off to the north and see this magnificent finger of rimrock behind a marsh pond. I sketched and photographed this scene during a visit to the refuge in fall 2007 and painted it in my studio in January.

Acrylic on canvas, 18 by 24 inches. #2008.82. $75 at Etsy

Juniper Tree

Juniper Tree

A lone juniper perches on a ridge top in the Harney County desert of eastern Oregon.

Forest

Forest

A foggy morning in the woods both subdues the distant light and brings out the color of the foreground. This is a small, quick painting, done of the forest near our house.

Acrylic on canvas, 9 by 12 inches. #2008.80. Sold.

Buena Vista View

Buena Vista View

Buena Vista overlook is a high point of rimrock in the middle of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in remote eastern Oregon. Here’s the view off the side on a snowy but sunny January day.

This is a medium-sized painting, a full two feet wide, and arrives ready to hang. It’s on stretched canvas, gallery wrapped and stapled on the back of the wooden stretchers, with the sides of the canvas painted black so the painting can be displayed with or without a frame.

Acrylic on canvas, 18 by 24 inches. #2008.78. $95 at Etsy
